Anastrozole (Arimidex) uses, side effects, , sold under the brand name Arimidex among others, is a medicine used along with other remedies for breast cancer. Specifically, it is used for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. In addition, it has been used to reduce breast cancer in those at high risk. It is taken orally.
ARIMIDEX (anastrozole) tablets for oral administration contain 1 mg of anastrozole, a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. It’s chemically described as 1,3-Benzenediacetonitrile, a, a’, a’-tetramethyl-5-(1H-1,2,4-triazole-1-ylmethyl).
Anastrozole is an off-white powder having a molecular weight of 293.4. Anastrozole has medium aqueous solubility (0.5 mg/mL in 25°C); solubility is independent of pH in the physiological selection.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ANASTROZOLE(ARIMIDEX)
Hot flashes, headache, joint pain/stiffness/swelling, bone/muscle pain, trouble sleeping, dizziness, stomach upset, nausea/vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight gain, tiredness/weakness, increased coughing, or sore throat may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: easily broken bones, muscle pain/stiffness, mental/mood changes (such as depression), numb/tingling skin, swelling hands/ankle/feet, shortness of breath, unusual vaginal discharge/bleeding/burning/itching/odor, pain/redness/swelling of arms or legs, vision changes, signs of liver disease (such as nausea/vomiting that doesn’t stop, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine).
Get medical help right away if you have any very serious side effects, including: chest/jaw/left arm pain, confusion, trouble speaking, weakness on one side of the body.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
Before taking this medicine
You shouldn’t use Arimidex if you’re allergic to anastrozole, even if you are breastfeeding on a baby, or if you haven’t yet completed menopause. Arimidex is not to be used in men or children.
To ensure Arimidex is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have –
- Cardiovascular disease;
- circulation problems;
- A history of stroke or blood clot?
- Severe liver disease;
- High cholesterol;
Arimidex can reduce bone mineral density, which might increase your chance of developing osteoporosis. Your bone mineral density might have to get tested before and during treatment with anastrozole.
Dosage: 0.5-1mg every other day
